ByToday, we look at some natural remedies that you can do at home to cure your heartburn. This will be part of on on-going series.
Even minor changes to your lifestyle can help cure heartburn or prevent it from happening all together. Later in the series, we’ll expand more on these health topics, but here’s 7 natural home remedies for heartburn that you can start right now.
Watch Your Weight
Being overweight is a general health risk, but it’s particularly nasty in producing heartburn attacks. According to the Mayo Clinic, the extra weight can add pressure to your abdomen, which pushes up your stomach—causing acid to back up into your esophagus.
Getting the right exercise is important. If you’re overweight now, don’t kill yourself trying to lose it all tomorrow. Take it slow. Losing 1-2 pounds weekly is very healthy.
Avoid Foods that Cause Heartburn
This is the main culprit for many. It might be pizza or a stiff drink that triggers heartburn. This tends to be a personal thing, so pay attention to the foods that cause heartburn for you. When heartburn happens, take note of what you had to eat and drink that day.
For many, tomato sauce is a major player, which is why pizza and pasta tends to lead many into uncomfortable evenings. Alcohol can also trigger heartburn in some people.
Don’t Wear Tight Clothes
While you may have somehow fit into those tight jeans, your body isn’t too happy. Just like being overweight, tight clothing in the waist region can throw off your internal body and end up causing heartburn.
Smaller Meals
Ever get heartburn after a nice Thanksgiving meal? One way to avoid acid reflux is to eat smaller portions. Take it nice and easy. This is also a key element in losing weight.
Don’t Lie Down After Eating
Many are guilty of this little pleasure. You’ve had a great meal and now you just want to lie down, relax and maybe taking in some TV. This is a culprit in creating a heartburn attack. Ideally, wait 2-3 hours after eating before you lie down.
Stop Smoking
According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking decreases the lower esophageal sphincter’s ability to properly function. And it’s generally unhealthy.
Elevate Your Bed
Well, not the whole thing. Ideally, you want to elevate the head of your bed about 6 inches. This uses gravity to keep your acid where it belongs. Elevation can come from under your headboard or mattress.
